Community Recovery Centre

Phase: Schematic Design

Year: 2024

Value: $6 million

Area: 15,500 sf

Located off Bute Inlet on British Columbia's coast, this proposed recovery centre is the first phase of a retreat centre for the community, who are placing these buildings on the ruins of their past - reclaiming their land on a journey of recovery.

Cedar Plank Houses are a local vernacular to the region - large planes of cedar wood, naturally water resistant, overlapping to shed water and protect interior space. Similar principles guided this design, with cedar planks and posts framing the ground plane, while a large roof canopy is added to further preserve the Architecture. Operable wooden screens allow the building to react to sun, wind and rain, while also giving residents the opportunity of experiencing different environmental exposures, even while indoors. Views to the open and rainforest behind will make this facility allow thoughtful reflection and connection to nature for the guests.

We provide regional design solutions that harmonize the needs of our clients with the communities we live in.
